President's Message

CCRSP 2022-2024    President Julia Thorn's Message

When I retired in 2016, a wonderful person was there at the ceremony. The legendary Cathy Neagle, former school board chairperson, invited all to join a special group of retirees.  I only knew that teachers whom I admire belong to it. My life's colleagues and role models form the soul of this amazing association of pioneers.

From men and women such as these, I learn of the issues that impact the teaching profession, the strength we receive from interacting with people of a shared experience, and the example we set for each other and others to come. They teach me that volunteerism has a positive impact on our community. I learn that together we form a voice for people who spent careers in teaching, forming, and nurturing North Carolina.

From and for them, I see our cause is pure and just. 85% of our members are not able to pursue a second career to make up the deficits of pensions with no cost of living adjustments:  We must communicate with policymakers. Our profession foresees a 3,000-person deficit in the teaching force in the coming year:  We must fund and give teaching scholarships and support policies that draw youth to education. Our state's resources are limited:  We must volunteer in all aspects of community life to help save North Carolina's money, particularly during these times that call for endurance and determination.

We have much for which we are grateful. We have reason to celebrate and revere our members, some approach age 90, to rejoice that we have our fellowship and mission work ahead, and to find comfort and courage that we are united in our cause and purpose: Together we are strong because retirees deserve better!                   --- Julia Thorn, August 2, 2023
